INIAV is a State Laboratory related to the Agricultural Research and Veterinarian Science. The main research areas are: food science and technology, food and feed safety, forestry, plant and animal health, animal and plant microbiology and pathology, animal production, plant and animal breeding and genetics, agrarian systems, viticulture, olive and fruit trees and soil fertility.


The INIAV in Elvas is the National Research Institute for breeding grain legumes, cereals, forage and pastures. The breeding programme of grain legumes started in 1986. As a result of this activity, we already have 11 varieties in our National Catalogue of Varieties (5 varieties of chickpea, 1 variety of faba bean, 2 varieties of pea, 2 varieties of lentil and 1 variety of cowpea).

Dr. Graça Pereira leads the task 2.1 of WP2, concerning “Sourcing and characterization of genetic diversity of local genetic resources of cowpea, faba bean and pea” and also is involved task 2.2.1 “Evaluation of yield stability, maturity, resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses under site specific organic and conventional conditions”.

Dr. Isabel Duarte is involved in WP2, task 2.1. and task 2.2.1 concerning to  ecophysiological studies and yield stability evaluation.
